Cuenca- Part A

We have been to Cuenca (a 2 hour drive south) a few times already, but have never had the chance to really explore the city. The first time we went was a very, very short trip-in fact, it was only for groceries-things we can't buy here in Tambo- and the second time was also a quick trip to pick up a sister visiting from the states (WI in fact) and get a quick overview of the city from one of our friends, but to say we actually got to SEE the city, would be inaccurate, so we decided it was time to take a few days and explore Cuenca! (wow, that was a long sentence, sorry about that)

Cuenca, as you may have read, is the #1 spot in the world for retiree's right now! It is a beautiful city with many interesting things to see and do, friendly people, great food and since there are so many Gringo's, it's a sure fact you will be able to find someone that speaks English if needed.

We wanted to make a day out of it, so we left at 7am and headed to the bus stop. The buses are constant around Tambo, so there is never a need to wait a long time for a bus-especially to Cuenca. In fact, many people commute to Cuenca for work, so there is always several buses heading that way. To take the bus to Cuenca it costs $7.00. Sounds pretty good, right? Well, it get's better- $7.00 total, roundtrip for both of us! It's $1.75 there & back, so, do the math- $1.75 x 4 = $7.00! I think we can handle that!

Here are a few photos of our trip to Cuenca:

Expect to see this on any street corner-fresh fruit & juice-yum!
 Not uncommon as well...
1st stop... Coffee!!!
Breakfast Time!
One of the big indoor food markets in Cuenca...yes, it's actual name is '9th of October'

Need a chicken? Just go to the local pet shop, yep, that's where they're sold!

(from our last trip to Cuenca- fellow Wisconsin-ites)

We had to make sure to get some great food in Cuenca & so we did...

Wes went for a meat, rice & veggies dish...
While Brittany opted for the ceviche, both tasted great!

There is a great look-out of the city you can visit called Mirador de Turi. You can take a taxi, bus or if you're on a budget-walk. Guess what we did? ... yep, you guessed it-we walked! All the way up 438 stairs! Phew, we were tired when we got to the top, but it was definitely worth it!
Here are just a few of the shots we got...

"Could you tell me where Cuenca is?"
"That way"
The foreigners are so helpful... haha:)

This dog would not leave Wes' side for some reason, so he's in about half of our shots, but it's ok, he was cute:)

We have SOOO many more photos from our Cuenca trip, so check back soon for Part B!
